Abstract

Sarcopenia is a common disease in the elderly population that is associated with increased adverse outcomes including falls functional decline frailty mortality severely affecting quality of life and increasing health care costs. There are crucial steps to delay the development of sarcopenia and maintain the muscle health of the elderly like early screening early diagnosis and early intervention. Nutrition plays a key role in the treatment of sarcopenia. However nutritional interventions have not received sufficient attention in practice. The need for sarcopenia prevention and therapy is becoming more urgent because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the aging of the population. To highlight the important role of nutrition in the prevention and treatment of sarcopenia the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia AWGS established a Special Interest Group SIG to form 14 nutritional consensuses from 6 themes for the elderly ≥60 years of age based on evidence-based medicine methods to retrieve papers published in 2016-2021 related to muscle health in Asians 1. nutritional status malnutrition and screening 2. diets and dietary patterns 3. nutritional supplementation 4. lifestyle interventions 5. outcomes and assessment 6. impacts of COVID-19. The consensus emphasizes the impact and role of nutrition and the COVID-19 pandemic on muscle health and sarcopenia in older adults providing a practical framework for addressing muscle health in the community. The article interprets the core information of the consensus.
